Program Dates, Duration and Content :
- Program dates : From Monday, July 26 to Friday, August 13, 2010
- Program duration: 3 weeks, with a total schedule volume of 71 hours
- Program content: The program comprises classes in the morning and teaching modules and cultural and educational outings in the afternoon.
Mornings - French Classes (15 hours/week)
Morning classes have four components:
1) Advanced Language Training
You will strengthen written and oral communication skills by:
- The use and analysis of written, audio and visual material;
- Systematic oral and written training;
- Communication activities
In addition to strengthening your own communication skills, these activities will allow you to collect a storehouse of written, audio and visual references for your own professional use. They will also stimulate regular reflection about the concept of "learning to learn."
2) Emphasis on Oral Practice
You will develop and refine your comprehension and oral communication skills through a wide range of interactive activities with specific attention paid to pronunciation, intonation and fluency.
3) Methodological Exploration
You will enrich your professional skills using the linguistic work in the course (see components 1 and 2 above) to identify teaching approaches that make innovative use of props and educational activities.
In the multimedia lab, you will have the opportunity to watch and experience personally a fully computerized French as a foreign language course, created by a professor at UQAM's Summer Schools.
You will also participate in another multimedia laboratory session whose objective is to optimize your Internet searches for teaching resources. By the session's end, you will have a wide selection of the best websites devoted to French as a foreign language.
4) Cultural Dimension
You will deepen your knowledge of the French-speaking world with a specific emphasis on life in Quebec and in French Canada. A variety of subjects will be explored, including :
- Culture and Society :
You will read the French press regularly, and pay specific attention to the multimedia (television and radio) archives of Radio-Canada, the national television network. - Creative Arts :
One of your activities will be an in-depth project on the film La Grande Séduction (2003) by Quebec filmmaker Jean-François Pouliot and Invasions barbares (2003) by Denys Arcand.
You will explore how to create teaching activities using this film in playful, dynamic ways. The methodology features a process that will enable you to apply this teaching approach (i.e. the development of written comprehension skills, or of oral and written production skills) to films of your choice. - Climate and the Environment
You will also engage in an analysis of how to encourage the acquisition of intercultural skills at all teaching levels of French as a foreign language.
All teaching materials are included.
