Entrance eligibility OBLIGATES YOU when applying for this "Explore" bursary program to comply with EACH of the following conditions:
- you must be a Canadian citizen or have Permanent Resident status
in Canada, - you must have attended post secondary education or have completed Grade 11 (Secondary V in the Province of Quebec) or be at the postsecondary level by the time your course begins,
- have been a full-time student for at least one semester during the current school year.
Every year, university students across Canada are given the opportunity to participate in a five-week summer "Explore" bursary program, be it English or French as a second language, dispensed by accredited establishments. UQAM Summer Schools received its accreditation in 2001, permitting its participation in the Program (French as a second language).
Each Province and Territory in Canada receives a quota of bursaries to be allotted randomly to eligible Program applicants that have met all the above requirements.

Registration for the "Explore" Program
To register for this program, complete the registration form directly on the "Explore" Program website. Please note that participants are selected by an impartial drawing of lots at the CMEC, not at UQAM Summer Schools.
If you have been selected by the CMEC to participate in our program at UQAM, we will contact you by e-mail, officially confirming your participation. You will have 48 hours (2 working days) to respond to our e-mail regarding whether you accept or refuse this bursary. If you do accept the bursary, we will be sending you all the documents for completion, to be returned to us within ten (10) days accompanied by a cheque for $150, payable to UQAM, to cover the registration costs. These costs will not be reimbursed. If we do not hear from you within those ten (10) days, your bursary will automatically be allotted to another applicant.

Placement Test
Following a placement test on the first day of the program, you will be streamed into one of our six (6) instruction levels (from Beginner to Advanced). Classes comprise approximately 16 students. Courses are held in our principal downtown campus in the heart of Montreal.
Program Description
The entire program consists of 160 hours of instruction. Breakdown follows:
70 hours of French as a second language instruction in the morning, Monday to Friday.
This intensive morning program focuses on an integrated global approach whereby all the language aspects (vocabulary, grammar, language functions (agreeing and disagreeing, for instance), pronunciation) are dealt with not as separate items but as part and parcel of a theme-based curriculum.
In the course of this program, you will take an active part in various activities and exercises designed to boost and strengthen your language skills, both written and oral.
Following our intensive morning program, you will get a lot of practice in and exposure to the language of your choice through numerous and varied theme-based activities that will revolve around the discovery and better understanding of Montreal, Quebec and Canada. The various themes are as follows:
- Culture and Society
- Local and World Cuisine
- Fashion and the Arts
- The Climate and the Environment
Course material, manual and photocopies, will be provided by UQAM.
56 hours of Communication Workshops and Practical Class Outings in the afternoon, Monday to Friday.
Communication Workshops will be offered in class at the university or throughout the city (1). Most of these activities are free of charge, but certain optional ones may cost money. Afternoon activities are included in the program; however, optional evening and weekend activities may cost additional sums. You should allow for around $150 in additional expenses for the Summer Language Bursary Program.
(1) Bus/metro tickets are not included in the program. For all your transportations within your stay in Montreal, a weekly pass is available at Berri-UQAM metro station for about a $25 (tax included) fee.

+/- 30 hours of research and assignments for the duration of the program.
Although the course is not credited, "Explore" students will receive a Certificate of Participation and Evaluation at the end of the program. It will be their responsibility to check with their home university as to whether they will recognize the course and grant credit equivalence for it. To date, all equivalences were granted by all the universities of origin of the Explore students.
Housing
You have a choice in housing. You may choose to reside in the University Residences or you may choose to live with a French-speaking host family. No other housing accommodations will be permitted (staying with family, friends, camping, etc. ).
Residence Housing
You will share a large apartment with 2 to 7 other students / participants in our programs.
You will have:
- desk
- closet
- telephone with voice mail
- linens and towels. Linens are changed weekly
Each shared apartment is equipped with:
- kitchen with stove and 1 or 2 refrigerator(s)
- 1 or 2 bathroom(s)
- 1 or 2 toilet(s)
- a large living area
Cleaning sundries are provided. However, maid service is not.
Additional services offered by UQAM Residences:
- Access to laundry room at a minimal cost
- Conference room on each floor
- Front desk reception and video surveillance 24 / 7
- Internet access available in your bedroom for a monthly charge – registration once at UQAM

Family Housing
When choosing to stay with a Francophone family, you will live a total immersion experience. Just like living at home, you will have an opportunity to continue practising and expanding your language skills while getting an even better understanding of what life is like in Montreal.
Our carefully-selected families are both fun and friendly. You will be welcome into their homes with open arms. Clean and comfortable, our families, between 45 and 90 minutes travel-time (bus and/or metro) from your classes here at UQAM.

Meals
In residence
You will receive $105 per week as a food budget. You will be able to cook in the residence or visit the many cafés and restaurants situated near the university and its residences. The cooking option is, of course, much more economical! (Cooking utensils are not provided in the apartements)
With the family
You will eat breakfast and dinner with the family. You will be given the opportunity to prepare yourself your own bag lunch.
